Fireworks
With the 4th of July coming up here in the States, I thought I'd link you to my favorite fireworks tutorial:
How to Photograph Fireworks (Digital Photography School)
Short version:
- Tripod (required)
- Remote Trigger (highly recommended)
- Manual Exposure (stop freaking out. Set it to your lowest ISO, f/8-ish and 5 seconds exposure to start. Adjust exposure time and aperture as necessary)
- Manual Focus (set it to infinity or focus on a street light far away and turn off auto-focus)
- Location/Composition (include something interesting in the foreground to give context and add interest to your shot)

I'm not in the US, but will be looking out for your shots next week! I've recently purchased a remote trigger/timer, as I'm waiting patiently to shoot some lightning. Excellent bit of kit and would also recommend it for this sort of work.
ReplyDeleteIf you don't have one, cameras will often have a short self timer (2s) that can be used to prevent shake.
@ q-pix - Great tips. The 2s timer can be a little tricky when trying to capture fireworks, but it does help cut down on shake (and is great for other long exposure shots).
